First developed in 1916 by the Martin Guitar Company for the Oliver Ditson Company, the Dreadnought was named after the battleship HMS Dreadnought due to its unprecedented size.

Dreadnoughts are characteristically powerful guitars which excel at strumming and flat picking. Modern examples often feature a wider nut width and string spacing at the saddle which allow the fingerstyle player to also use this design effectively.
