Artist Spotlight: Will McNicol

During these strange and unpredictable times, circumstances are increasingly difficult for those within the music industry, and we all know the industry would be nothing without its musicians. We encourage anyone, especially now, to support these wonderful musicians in whatever way possible.

We are incredibly grateful to have a community of artists which we work closely with and help us to document the beautiful bespoke instruments which come through our doors.

Last week we shone our spotlight upon the sensational Mr Adam Miller, which you can read here.

This week the focus is upon our dear friend and a face seen frequently within the TNAG showroom, Will McNicol himself. We’ve been working alongside Will for years now and he has featured in our demos, sessions, academy series and ‘The Composer Series’. There is an abundance of spectacular videos of Will’s sensational playing.

Where do we begin to start when it comes to the wonderful Will…

Will is an exceptional player and equally so an exceptional human. His fingerstyle playing marries soothing with uplifting, whilst managing to maximise the potential of every instrument placed into his hands. His intricate, gentle yet powerful approach is inspiring to anyone who sees him play. He is a master of his art and an absolute guitar genius.

Will began playing Classical guitar but now often plays and composes on steel string instruments too, his performances are truly diverse with a variety of modern and traditional techniques. He has played guitar since the age of six, been awarded Guitarist Magazines UK Acoustic Guitarist of the year (2011) and been one of Acoustic Guitar Magazine's 30 Great Guitarists Under 30 from around the world (2014). With three diplomas and many acclaimed albums of original material, who better to be working with to document these gorgeous guitars in all their glory.

Will is hands down one of the most diligent and industrious humans we’ve ever come across. He’s toured globally, often at solo shows and festivals, however he has also supported/and or shared the stage with renowned artists such as Pierre Bensusan, Clive Carroll, Jon Gomm, Martin Simpson and Mumford and Sons amongst others, as well as participating in orchestral work. His performances have been described as "beautifully flawless" and "magical" by the music press. He also runs workshops and masterclasses worldwide and is a guitar tutor alongside.

Will is also a remarkable composer and is one of an exclusive collection of British guitar composers who can not only write in various styles, but can quickly adapt his manner to the character of the instrument he's playing.

It has been an absolute joy to have him host our latest series “The Composer Series”. In these videos Will writes a piece specifically for, and inspired by, each instrument, and then provides the sheet music for the composition for all to learn. We’re very fortunate to be able to see the start to finish process of the master at work and love being able to share this with everybody.

Will has also participated in  our The Academy Series, teaching his gorgeous songs to TNAG customers...

Will's latest album "Rain On Qingming Bridge" is often on repeat on the TNAG Office Stereo, alongside his variety of other albums which can be purchased here.
We really do encourage you to support Will McNicol in anyway possible, we can vouch for the fact that it is a truly enjoyable experience for all...
