Gerber Guitars are BACK!
Ryan Gerber of Gerber guitars is without a doubt one of the hottest new luthiers on the luthier circuit at the moment and since taking the plunge into full-time guitar making last year his feet have not touched the ground. We started working with Ryan at the beginning of 2017 after watching him for a few years and playing some of his instruments at various shows around the world. A dedicated family man with a passion for the outdoors, Ryan is driven by his goal to create instruments that can make your heart melt from a hundred miles away, and boy, oh boy, can he do just that!
Last year we ordered two guitars from Ryan, an RL15+ in Cuban Mahogany and an RL15 in Macassar Ebony. The RL15+ sold before it left his shop in Ohio, and the second we managed to get our grubby hands on (only for 24 hours I might add), just enough time to photograph and have our dear friend Mike Dawes perform a knockout demo of it.
As I have said in my blogs this year (I say for fear of repeating myself), we are lucky enough to play some of the world's finest guitars here at The North American Guitar on a daily basis (sorry not sorry) but every now and again one just jumps up and slaps you in the face and for me it was Ryan's RL15. This guitar was alive in every sense of the word; it filled the room with lush thick overtones that motivate you to keep on playing, with articulation and sustain that were crisp, clear and beautifully balanced. All in all, playing her made you feel like she would go wherever you want her to go. A fine example that just goes to show we truly are living in the 'Golden Era' of guitar making!
Here is what session player Jimmy Owen wrote about her at the time:
"I am absolutely blown away by this instrument, what strikes me the most is the balance of its frequencies. The highs are sweet and flute-like with a rich and velvety bass, none of which are overpowering. It covers all the major territory for me, punching through for fingerstyle yet harp-like on its strumming attack, the feel in the hand is silky and the access to the upper frets is seamless. The guitar itself is nothing shy of a work of art, it’s aesthetically stunning and the attention to detail is out of this world. This instrument just keeps you coming back for more and inspires each time you pick it up." Jimmy.
But, like I said, that guitar sold within 24 hours of it arriving in the UK so, in true TNAG fashion, what did we do? We ordered another one just like it, and began the wait!
But, one had to ponder, could it possibly be as good...?
Yesterday we took delivery of one of the most eagerly anticipated guitars this year - the 2nd Gerber RL15 in Macassar Ebony and Swiss Spruce. Without throwing a bunch of fluffy adjectives at you (as we guitar sellers love to do) all I can say is YES! YES, YES, YES, YES, YES it is outstanding! So outstanding it even made my playing sound good (and that takes some doing)! After letting her arrive and settle for an agonising 24 hours, Richard and I unpacked the beauty, tuned her up to tension and let her settle for a few hours. Then took her for a spin! An hour later I came up for air! (here come the adjectives)...Lush, thick, present bass that is filled with bell-like trebles makes this guitar so beautifully balanced it is hard to believe it is brand new! A true joy to play. No, in fact, a true joy just to be in the same room with her! Yet another knock out from Mr Gerber!
Aesthetically this guitar is subtle and beautiful in every way, paired with craftsmanship that Leonardo DaVinci would be proud of. This RL15 has a number of mouth-watering features, from the Macassar Ebony for the back and sides to the jaw-dropping hand carving segmented rosette...
