Going Electric: Nik Huber
In this week's Going Electric, we’re joined by our dear friend Ben Smith for a closer look at some of the most alluring electrics in our showroom, a pair of dual humbucker, upgraded spec marvels from Nik Huber Guitars out in Germany.
The Redwood and Orca are two of our favourite models from Nik and his team, and each brings something distinctly different in both tone and feel. The all solid, punchy and dynamic Orca delivers classic, lively rock tones with ease, but also retains great dynamics and clarity as we hear in the opening segment. Meanwhile, the chambered Redwood with a specially voiced set of Haussel Pickups presents a smooth, creamy voice for cleans with ample bite with the amp driven!
We had a huge amount of fun putting these guitars through their paces side-by-side and taking a deep dive into what makes these instruments so inviting for the player and collector alike.

This extraordinary new Redwood model from Nik Huber Guitars is an absolute showstopper, with a custom ordered One-Piece Exceptionally Curly Redwood top in Nik's gorgeous Tiger Eye finish.
The Redwood adopts the same iconic silhouette as the Dolphin model, but comes in at an astonishingly light weight with semi-hollow construction underneath the remarkable figured top. This lends an entirely different voice and character to the instrument and culminates in something both unique, and breathtaking in the Huber lineup.
In playing, the set of Haussel Pickups provide a nuanced and versatile range for the guitar; smooth and dynamic with the amp set clean but equally lively and explosive with a touch more gain dialled into the amp.
Of course, hailing from the workshop of Nik and his team, the playability of the guitar is second to none, with superb access to the upper registers thanks to the signature neck heel and cutaway with a sweet, rounded tone even on the treble strings up at the dusty end of the board.

This is our second Orca '59 from Nik Huber Guitars, handbuilt in Germany by Nik and his incredible team with stunning attention to detail in every aspect of the build.
Our first Orca received a standout review with Guitar.com, and had us floored from the first time we flipped the latches. So naturally we leapt at the opportunity to bring another in, and once again we're blown away by the craftsmanship and musicality of the instrument, especially given the range up upgraded features adorning it!
This particular example is built in Spanish Cedar for the body with an upgraded Exceptional Eastern Flame Maple top, capturing much of the resonance and sustain we associate with the iconic 50s singlecut we all know and love whilst retaining a voice and feel that is so distinctly Huber.
