The TNAG showroom got a serious shot of loud, rollicking blues-rock with visiting artist Jared James Nichols! It's a joke around the shop that anytime we special feature a guitar, it sells before we can share it online. Such is the case this week, but don't let that stop you from enjoying these Turnstone, Iris and Santa Cruz features!
Here's what you missed at TNAG last week...
Last week, Jared James Nichols stopped by our showroom and tore into our collection of vintage Gibson guitars! First up, this 1955 ES-175! Watch for the next demos and session videos coming shortly.
Just Arrived: Turnstone Guitars TS, TM and TG
We just got in more beautiful instruments from Turnstone Guitars of England! What's more, we got one of each of luthier Rosie Heydenrych's models - the Grand Auditorium-sized TG, the OM-inspired TM, and her deep-bodied parlor, the TS. Check out these new arrivals with Lindsay on this week's Just Arrived.
Presents: Episode 33. Santa Cruz H13
In Episode 33 of Presents, we check out the Santa Cruz H13. The conception of this 13-fret small-bodied guitar blends both vintage guitar specs and aesthetics with a basis in acoustic science.
"SCGC’s concept for the H-13 is to achieve power beyond what would be expected in a small-bodied guitar. Two fundamental lutherie tricks make this possible: a longer string length (more downward pressure at the saddle) and more air space via a deeper body (increased volume and bass response). To place the bridge in the optimal position for power and maintain the longer string length, the neck needs to join the body at the 13th fret. Cool, huh? This is a gorgeous classic with power and presence expected from a much larger instrument. Perfect for aggressive fingerstyle blues and vocal accompaniment, the H-13 feels really sweet to hold."
Presents: Episode 34. Iris DF Smeck 12-Fret
When it comes to bringing vintage classics into the modern era, Iris Guitars over in Burlington, VT is at the top of the heap. Listen in as Nick digs into this 1930s Roy Smeck-inspired model. Holding its ground as one of the largest body shapes in the Iris lineup, this J-45 sized slope-shoulder dread emits a powerful and robust voice. Its European spruce top, and Honduran mahogany back and sides give this guitar a heightened amount of responsiveness, resonance, and touch sensitivity, making it an excellent choice for flatpickers and fingerstyle players alike.
Pick of the Week: Spalt R 1803 "The Glass Flower Garden"
First appearing at the 2018 NAMM show, this Spalt Instruments electric guitar made quite an impression. With a solid mahogany body and neck, beautiful flamed maple inserts on the top, and Spalt's own single coil pickup (outfitted with a cover made from a 1930s French hair clip!), this unusual guitar charmed many with both its tone and aesthetics.
Oh, and did we mention the resin garden scene on the top?
