This week we welcomed CP Thornton to our roster of luthiers! If vintage-inspired electrics are what you're after, look no further than Chuck's elegantly crafted designs. We also featured some very special guitars from Santa Cruz and Stephen Marchione in our Presents and Pick of the Week series.
Here's what you missed
Here's what you missed at TNAG this week...
Just Arrived: CP Thornton Contoured Legend
We've had our new Head of Electrics Joel Bauman do the honors with introducing another new addition to TNAG: CP Thornton Guitars! Out of our first batch, three have already sold. But lucky for us, this lusciously curvy Contoured Legend in gold with cream sides is still here. Check it out with Joel in our latest Just Arrived.
Presents: Episode 49. Santa Cruz OM Ancient Kauri
This very special ancient Kauri OM from Santa Cruz Guitar Company has two fascinating stories to tell. The first is that of the wood itself, the ancient Kauri, "which was unearthed in the beginning of the new millennium and radiocarbon dated at 45,000 years old." The rest, well, we'll leave that to Nick, here in our 49th Presents.
Pick of the Week: Marchione 17" Cello Build Archtop
For his Pick of the Week, Jordan showcases the prowess of this beautiful, bold 17" cello-build archtop from Stephen Marchione. A well-rounded luthier (he builds acoustic, electrics, archtops, and even violins!), Stephen's style and approach seems especially suited to crafting archtops with a lush, resonant voice, perfect for jazz.
Featured Electric: CP Thornton HTL-II (Homage to Leo), Teal with Cream
This guitar may have been sold before it arrived, but we couldn't help but share this other fantastic example of Chuck's work! The C.P. Thornton Hot Rod Series Guitars are the result of years of guitar building experience and the HTL-II (Homage to Leo) is without a doubt one of the best S-style electrics you'll ever put your hands on. Chuck Thornton has taken all he has learned about the right choices of tone wood and electronics for each specific build, in this case using very old growth Nootka Cedar from Alaska. Unlike Western Red Cedar, Nootka is a very dense Cedar and has a tone that is incredibly rich and full. He pairs this with a beautifully torrefied Rock Maple neck which provides an awesome feel and incredible stability. The absolutely stunning hotrod-inspired two-tone Teal/Cream finish brings it all together in an untouchable package of looks, sound, and playability.
Featured Acoustic: Traugott Model R, Brazilian Rosewood & German Spruce
Judging by Jeff Traugott’s finely crafted guitars, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to find out that he worked for Santa Cruz Guitar Company before striking out on his own. Since setting up his workshop in 1991, he has been crafting a very select number of instruments each year, allowing him to give his full attention to each guitar and to each musician for whom he builds. The Model R is his most popular design, comparable in size to a standard Martin OM, but ever so slightly bigger overall. Full-bodied and easy-playing, it's a delightfully versatile instrument in any tonewood combination. Built with one of the rarest sets of "Kentucky" Brazilian rosewood & German spruce, this instrument is a true masterpiece.
