Highlights: Iris Guitars

Iris guitars are very much the cool, new kid on the block in the world of all things Lutherie. Formed in 2018 under the premise of producing luthier quality instruments at affordable pricing- an idea which we can all get behind. Their traditional style, exceptional playability and affordable price point are all qualities which make them a deserved choice as our highlights this week.
"Every Iris Guitar is made by hand in Burlington, Vermont in the same small shop as Circle Strings and Creston Guitars with the same fine attention to detail and quality as these world class instruments. Iris Guitars has streamlined the build process by focusing on one model with limited options to keep it simple and help make a more affordable version of the incredible instruments coming out of the same shop for years."- Adam Buchwald
Adam Buchwald is the mastermind behind Iris guitars. Adam has wealth of knowledge around high end instruments, repairs and building techniques. Adam began training in lutherie and working with Bob Jones, a respected luthier in NY. This followed with years of teaching building and repairing in Vermont, as well as a stint of working at Froggy Bottom Guitars. Following this knowledge and experience, Adam began Circle Strings, where gorgeous, bespoke instruments have been made for customers for years. Before all of this, Adam was a working musician—thus very aware of the desirability of a custom instrument as well as the financial implications that this can have.
This is where Iris guitars was born, through a combination of modern technology, futuristic techniques and great experience. By streamlining processes, incorporating new technology and refining appointments and designs, luthier quality instruments at a lower price point are available.
We first began representing Iris Guitars at the very end of last year and have been blown away by their instruments ever since. One of the most wonderful things about the world of lutherie (and working at TNAG) is the wide array of instruments which we receive and their own uniquities. Every luthier has their own style, individual appointments and tonal goals which characterise their guitars and make them stand-out as their own. Our favourite game to play at our Old Street showroom was to blindly guess the guitars being played downstairs, from the upstairs office, from nothing but their sonic qualities. You’d be surprised at how easy this was, the instruments we have really do sport their makers and their personal styles/preferences.
That being said... there’s something incredibly warm and comforting about the qualities of a classic, century Gibson guitar and we must say that Iris create an impeccable yet unique iteration of this. The first two Iris guitars we received were the OG models, based upon the beloved L-00 style. Not long after we received these guitars we filmed a TNAG session with London-based band Night Flight. During this session it was so clear how these guitars sat so beautifully beneath vocals, as well as holding their own in solo demos.
As you can imagine, these OG models flew straight out the door and we've just received our second batch from Iris Guitars. This delivery included another OG Model, a CF and a DG model.
The CH-Model is based on the body shape of the Circle Strings tenor guitar and pays homage to the classic 0-17 model with its simple appointments. We received a CH Model in all Mahogany, which happened to find it's new home before we could even write this blog.

Iris DF Acoustic Guitar, Honduran Mahogany & European Spruce

The DF Model is Iris' Slope Shoulder Dreadnought model, comparable to the size of a Gibson J-45. Its European Spruce top, and Honduran Mahogany back and sides give this guitar a heightened amount of responsiveness, resonance, and touch sensitivity, making it an excellent choice for flatpickers and fingerstyle players alike. Outfitted in a gorgeous burst finish with a soft matte finish, this Iris DF has the look, feel, and tone of a true vintage-inspired instrument.

Iris OG Acoustic Guitar, Honduran Mahogany & European Spruce

And the previously mentioned L-00 inspired OG Model... This guitar sports a European spruce top, Katalox fretboard, and Mahogany neck, back, and sides. The slightly altered body shape adds body depth at the at tail block, rewarding a player with increased bass response. Paired with a satin finish that leaves the pores of the wood exposed, this Iris OG sings with a tone, resonance, and response that is extremely open, lively, and organic feeling.
We also have this same model available in a distressed finish.
