Just Arrived: A P90 powerhouse from Collings

It might be inspired by the Gibson Kalamazoo golden era, but this fully hollow, P90-equipped I-30 has the Texas refinements we know and love from Collings.
This particular body style is an enduring character. Double cutaway and fully-hollow is far from unique, but the Collings twists might just be.
“Our goal for the I-30 LC was to take the concept of a double cutaway, fully-hollow, P90-equipped guitar and refine it to the extent that it offers something truly new for today's players,” says Collings on their website.
The result? The most acoustically responsive and versatile electric guitar the Texas-maker has produced. And we’ve just taken delivery of one in a lovely sunburst over a maple top, back and sides.
It goes without saying, Collings make truly great guitars. The I-30 LC is certainly that. Designed to respond acoustically in perfect harmony with their electronics, this laminated design is Collings’ quest to deliver vintage tones in a truly modern guitar.
The LC denotes the laminate construction of the body, but don’t be fooled. Laminate here is no bad thing. This guitar is the result of a custom laminated construction technique that Bill Collings and his team developed in search of the most impressive tonal qualities of vintage, fully-hollow guitar design. Through extensive R&D and ‘critical listening’ Collings “developed a special combination of wood laminates, grain orientation, and ply thicknesses that achieves the optimal balance of overall weight, acoustic response, and feedback resistance.”
Under the hood, we’ve got trestle bracing. This design supports the top of the otherwise fully-hollow instrument. While trestle bracing isn’t unique to Collings (it was Gretsch who pioneered this in the late 50s), the idea is that by coupling the guitar’s top to its back you can enhance the sustain and make the instrument less susceptible to feedback. The trestles also provide added tonal structure and definition by bridging the gap between the instrument’s neck block and tail block. This gives you solid body style sustain, without the solid body style weight (the I-30 LC weights just over 5 lbs).
The trapeze-style tailpiece, super thin nitro finish, and floating pickguard all soar with vintage charm here. And then we plug her in and get those P90 sounds from the Lollar dog ears. The fat, raunchy P-90 tones we know and love are in abundance. On the Collings website, they say that the “Lollar Dog Ear P90s are perfectly matched to the instrument's acoustic response and offer a wide palette of tones from rich jazzy warmth to 1960s British Invasion style chime. Drawing its inspiration from both classic electric designs and our own previous models, the I-30 LC is an exciting step forward and an intriguing new Collings sound.”
This I-30 LC is more than just another take on a 330, it’s got tone, personality, and swagger all its own. But even with all of that, my favourite thing about a Collings? The haircut headstock.
We’ve always got a great selection of new and pre-owned Collings Guitars in stock. Check out them out here.
