The Lion Model is named after Ben Wilborn's son Leo and is the smaller of the two models we have received. Despite its smaller body it still sounds incredibly loud and powerful. This guitar is made with a stunning set of Ceylon Ebony for the back and sides and a Tunnel Redwood 14 top and the story behind this Redwood is one that does not disappoint. During the 1860's there was a railway tunnel built out in the Siskyou mountains, which had large redwood structures and framing. During the early 2000's there was a fire, which led to the decision to tear down the remaining tunnel and build a new one with steel infrastructure. The top is this guitar is therefore salvaged from that tunnel. The characteristic of this wood is surprisingly similar to Spruce- definitley more similar than redwoods usually are. It has a similar stiffness and sonic capabilities, which could be partially due to the Old Growth nature of this wood. However, it is incredibly clean and clear despite being aged, yet sports an oxidised aesthetic. When Ben Wilborn originally received the wood blank of this it had mineral stripes, from potential water seepage or train smoke, further packing heaps of character and history into this one instrument.
Here is the larger of the two models, the Elliebelle (named after Ben's daughter Ellie). This guitar is similar in size to a Marin OM, with Ben's own design and take on it. This guitar features a beautifully figured set of Curly Mahogany for the back and sides and an Adirondack Red Spruce top. There are stunning accents of Ivoroid, Ziricote and Gabon Ebony across the entire guitar, creating an intricate and contingent overall aesthetic.
