Taking A Closer Look At Maestro's Original Series

Maestro's Original Series was born from a desire to make acoustic instruments with high end, luthier built appointments and distinctive stylings at a price point that makes them accessible to a wider range of guitar lovers and musicians alike.

Hand built in Singapore by a small team in a dedicated workshop under the instruction of experienced luthier and founder Ho Zen Yong, Maestro guitars are constructed from solid, quality tone woods to a superb standard and voiced by Ho Zen utilising techniques learned from the one and only Ervin Somogyi.

In this blog, I want to take a closer look at the core models in Maestro's Original Series and what makes each instrument so unique in both voice and feel.

Maestro Original Series Temasek IR SB Acoustic Guitar, Indian Rosewood & Sitka Spruce - £1,999

The Temasek is the smallest body size in the lineup, and features a gorgeous set of Indian Rosewood for the back and sides paired with a Sitka Spruce top with the additional features of an armrest bevel and soundport.

Sonically, the guitar has a very balanced overall output with a surprising amount of body and level, but the punchy and immediate response in the midrange of the instrument is what really defines the tone of this lovely little number.

With the sounport and bevel, playing the Temasek is a very intimate and involved experience, and in tandem with the stellar playability makes for a very comfortable guitar you can play for hours on end.

Maestro Original Series Victoria IR CSB Acoustic Guitar, Indian Rosewood & Sitka Spruce - £1,999

The Victoria takes on the role of 000/OM in Maestro's Original Series, and is one of the most versatile acoustics they build, with this example made up from Indian Rosewood for the back and sides with a Sitka Spruce top with an Armrest Bevel, Soundport and Florentine Cutaway.

The sound of this instrument is notably balanced in classic OM fashion, with enough heft and power across the board to make it extremely versatile. Whether it's sitting under a vocal or the mainstay in a contemporary finger style piece, the Victoria takes it all on with zeal.

With Maestros slim, modern neck profile the guitar is very comfortable to play, and when you factor in the access granted by the cutaway, the intimacy of the bevel and responsive monitoring provided by the soundport, it really does make a tremendous all-rounder.

Maestro Original Series Le Raffles FM CSB AU Acoustic guitar, Flame Maple & Adirondack Spruce - £2,350

The next step up in size in the Original Series is the Raffles model, Maestro's gorgeous Small Jumbo.

This particular model features an Adirondack Spruce top with a stunning set of Flamed Maple for the back and sides, again featuring high end appointments in the Arm Bevel, Florentine Cutaway and Soundport.

For me, this guitar has the most activity in the shimmering areas of the treble frequencies, with inspiring overtones and harmonics backed up by the full, rounded low end that you would want from a small jumbo.

With this said, it remains a very versatile and responsive instrument that sounds mellow and luscious when played fingerstyle, while taking a flatpick explosively.

Maestro Original Series Singa SR CSB A Acoustic guitar, Santos Rosewood & Adirondack Spruce - £2,050

The Singa is the biggest silhouette in Maestros Original Series lineup and being a Medium Jumbo sized guitar, in this instance built up out of a very handsome set of Santos Rosewood for the back and sides paired with an Adirondack Spruce top, the rich, full bodied and powerful tone defines it's place in the series.

The huge voice of this instrument retains a clarity and chime that ensures a versatility accompanies the sonic heft of this wonderful instrument.

The Armrest Bevel takes the edge off the larger lower bout, and with the Florentine cutaway and soundport in tow the playability and feel of the Singa makes it perfect for contemporary fingerstyle playing, while also sitting beautifully under a voice or driving a song in a mix.
