Our First G.R. Bear Guitars Arrive!

Taking on a new luthier is one of the most enjoyable and inspiring parts of the journey here at The North American Guitar, and when the luthier in question is building instruments as extraordinary as the two we have just received from Australian-born, Vancouver-based luthier G.R. Bear, it brings no end of joy for everyone involved!

Rye began building guitars at the age of 15 following an upbringing of woodworking with his father, a trained wooden boat builder and traditional timber farmer. The turning point came when he began his apprenticeship with Guitar and Violin maker, Graham Caldersmith. In this time he discovered the art of building and drew from the wealth of experience and background in Aerophysics and Acoustic Studies that Graham brings to his builds, along with sophisticated modern building and tuning techniques, such as the Carbon Falcate Bracing that helps maintain the articulate, complex tone even under a heavy right hand.

Following the seven year apprenticeship, Rye went on to build instruments under his own name, bringing all of that experience and passion with him to develop a distinctive tone, feel and aesthetic that has had us absolutely floored from the moment we first met him at the La Conner Guitar Show in 2019.

From the moment you first pluck out a melody on a G.R. Bear the sheer volume and clarity is mesmerising, alongside the astonishing intonation and silky playability culminating in an instrument that simply screams to be played and enjoyed to the fullest. The beautiful clean lines and stunning choices in tone woods bring these instruments together and make for a pair we are immensely proud to see on the walls here in our UK showroom!

When Rye came in to hand deliver this sensational pair, we had the opportunity to take some time and talk about his journey as a luthier and the exquisite instruments in question, find that interview below;

G.R. Bear OM Acoustic Guitar, Tasmanian Blackwood & Western Red Cedar - £8,150

This Absolutely Staggering OM is one of our first two instruments from extraordinary Australian Luthier G.R. Bear, and features a ludicrously figured set of Fiddleback Tasmanian Blackwood for the back and sides paired with a Salvaged Western Red Cedar top.

Sonically, this magnificent OM boasts a power, projection and sustain that leaves both player and listener in awe, with the use of innovative Carbon Falcate Bracing aiding in both this respect and providing exceptional stability and rigidity to a lightly built and lively top.

There's an inherent singing musicality to the guitar that is deeply inspiring to interact with, excelling in both standard and dropped tunings. Although the instruments are built with contemporary finger style players in mind, the versatility and inspiring nature of the instrument along with the huge dynamic range makes for an OM that matches beautifully with a truly diverse range of playing styles.

G.R. Bear Grand 00 Acoustic Guitar, Desert Leopardwood & Engelmann Spruce - £7,650

One of our first two instruments from remarkable Australian Luthier G.R. Bear, this extraordinary 00 in beautiful Desert Leopardwood & Engelmann Spruce has had us absolutely floored from the first note.

The volume, sustain and projection belies the size of the guitar and culminates in a vibrant and responsive feel that one could, without dispute, describe as explosive.

The power and headroom of the instrument does nothing to detract from the detailed and characterful nature of this stunning 00, with as much in the way of clarity and depth played at a whisper as when exploring the tonal response at higher volumes, in part due to the use of innovative Carbon Falcate Bracing.

G.R. Bears instruments are thoughtfully aimed at contemporary finger style players, with outstanding playability and feel across the board with a sense of articulation and inspired musicality that suits a huge range of playing styles outside of this initial impression!
