Pick of the Week: Episode 6. McGreevy Model 2

In Episode 6 of our Pick of the Week, Nick highlights the 00-sized Model 2 acoustic guitar from Irish luthier Donal McGreevy. Western red cedar and Honduran mahogany are paired together for a dark, rich tone equally suited to fingerstyle and flatpicking.

McGreevy Model 2 Acoustic Guitar, Honduran Mahogany & Western Red Cedar - $7,015

Irish luthier Donal McGreevy only makes a small handful of guitars each year, and in doing so, each one is built with the highest level of craftsmanship and attention to detail. The Model 2 design is his take on the small bodied guitar. A western red cedar top joins the neck at the 13th fret, which capitalizes on the best qualities of a 12-fret’s resonance and a 14-fret’s access. The back and sides are Honduran mahogany, with Indian rosewood inner sides. The result is a richly dark tone with excellent volume and projection, and plenty of clarity and note separation. Combined with visually appealing appointments like the Hawaiian koa & ebony rosette and veneers, the McGreevy Model 2 is a perfect guitar for those seeking a modern instrument that shines when playing alternate tunings and melodic fingerstyle arrangements, as well as light strumming and flatpicking.
