The Santa Cruz Guitar Company Dreadnought Model
The Santa Cruz Guitar Company manages to encapsulate the dreadnought continuum with its roster of D-style models. Our showroom is currently stocked with a handful of these large-body powerhouses, and we've been fortunate to be able to spend time learning the distinct characters of each one. From the timeless flagship D Model in Mahogany and Sitka Spruce to the incredible 1934D in Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce, all of these dreadnoughts have a unique personality, feel, and voice.
At the core of Santa Cruz's dreadnought offerings is the D Model. Through innovative tapered bracing, Santa Cruz created a D-style instrument that resolved a variety of setbacks that historically marred the dreadnought body style and design for certain styles of playing. Formerly, these large instruments inherently produced robust bass frequencies and sparse trebles. While these characteristics were favorable in certain settings, they were equally viewed as detrimental to many players looking for mid-range poignancy and punch. The Santa Cruz D Model's unique tapered bracing enhances the midrange and treble without compromising any low end or volume. As a result, Santa Cruz created a dreadnought that possesses a more versatile, balanced tone that can meet the modern player's needs while still paying homage to its humble origins.
In addition to the standard D model, we currently have an incredible Custom D model that features a host of upgraded appointments. This Custom D employs the same tapered bracing and overall voicing of the original D Model. However, with a 1 11/16" nut width (versus the standard 1 3/4" nut width) and an Adirondack Spruce top, this custom model allows for increased playability, resonance, and fullness. With its Abalone purfling and 42-style fretboard inlays, this elevated Custom D boasts an aesthetic appeal that is right in line with its resonant tone.
While the D Model takes a step into the future, the 1934D is faithfully rooted in the historical prowess of the legendary 14-fret herringbone dreadnoughts from 1934. Offered in either Mahogany or Brazilian Rosewood, both harvested in the '30s, these guitars are not simply "like" the old stuff. These guitars are the old stuff. Due to the nature of the aged wood's crystallized resins, these guitars deliver the superior tone that is often only found within vintage instruments. Equipped with master grade Old Growth Adirondack Spruce, hot hide glue, and original nitro-cellulose lacquer formula, these guitars are outfitted with all natural materials that allow for impeccable resonance, clean responsiveness, and a true vintage "old bone" sound.
Finally, we come to the incomparable Custom Vintage Artist. This guitar became a fast favorite here in the showroom, and for good reason. Inspired by the most desirable qualities of the iconic Pre-War D-18, its Adirondack Spruce top and bracing, Master Grade Mahogany back and sides, and hot hide glue construction, give this guitar rich rumbling lows and articulate highs. Its advanced, scalloped X-bracing make this guitar a true bluegrass cannon with its powerful bass and clear upper definition. With a Mahogany V neck and 1 11/16" nut width, this Santa Cruz dreadnought is a top contender in terms of comfort and ease of play. It's no wonder that Doc Watson stated, "this is the Dreadnought I've been looking for all my life" upon playing the initial prototype for this model.
All in all, these dreadnought variants are a testament to the craftsmanship, subtlety, and thoroughness of Santa Cruz Guitar Company. From their vintage-inspired designs to their forward-thinking voicing techniques, Santa Cruz has developed a line of dreadnoughts that can meet the sonic and aesthetic needs of any player. These guitars are in stock now at The North American Guitar, and can all be seen in action via the videos in each of their respective listings. Take a listen for yourself, and hear the incredible voices of these Santa Cruz Guitar Company dreadnought variations.
