The Custom D is Santa Cruz's take on the iconic Dreadnought model, with the powerful high-headroom response and substantial low end one would expect, coupled with a touch more detail and balance than most traditional style builds.

In Mahogany and Adirondack, the makeup of this gorgeous instrument couldn't be more classic, only accentuated by the grade of the tone woods in question. The Mahogany sports charming figuring down the centre with Abalone detailing in the top, rosette and fretboard lending an elegance to the instrument amidst its solid, workhorse feel.

Sonically, there is of course a wealth of volume and projection to the guitar, with a subtle blend of vintage and contemporary voicing that makes for a deeply versatile instrument. What really sets apart the SCGC Custom D is the balance and clarity across the midrange and trebles, working with the rich bass response to produce a full and rounded tone that will easily drive a mix.

The playability is of course superb, with an immediacy to the left-hand feel that makes for a very engaging guitar to play. The 1 11/16" nut width makes for a comfortable and easy platform for chord voicings and lead lines and all through the board the guitar remains lively and precise.

This exquisite instrument from Santa Cruz Guitars is their OM Custom model acoustic guitar in Flamed Koa and Italian Spruce.

As one would expect from Richard Hoover and his team, the nuance and detail in this custom model is absolutely extraordinary with a distinct blend of classic features and high end appointments in line with the finest in contemporary luthierie.

Sustainable and remarkable woods lie at the core of every Santa Cruz build, and in this particular instrument the natural beauty of its construction makes it a truly wonderful example of this ethos in action. The Flamed Koa of the back and sides is outrageously figured, with the striking, clean visuals of the Italian Spruce top providing a stark counterpoint and detailed purfling to meet the two.

Sonically, the guitar treads a line between something intrinsically timeless and versatile and the distinctive depth that sets these instruments apart. Being an OM, the balance of the guitar makes it applicable for a range of styles and tunings, with the Koa adding a sweetness and warmth to the midrange with a stunning response and touch sensitive dynamics.

The guitar plays beautifully with an exceptionally comfortable slim neck carve and low action right out of the case, with clear note separation and articulation across the strings.

With an elastic and immediately comfortable feel under the left hand paired with an exceptionally rich and overtone laden output, the Firefly has a voice very much its own.

The detailed craftsmanship delivers the nuanced and exacting standards of Richard Hoover and his team with elegant blue details in the Purfling and Rosette of the guitar.

The voice of the instrument certainly cannot be understated. The Firefly is plenty loud and sits wonderfully in a mix amidst larger bodied instruments, offering a warm and well rounded tone with a hint of parlour-esque punch in the midrange.
