The James Trussart Deluxe SteelCaster Model

I first saw the James Trussart SteelCaster Deluxe model here in the UK when I noticed Luke Pritchard of The Kooks playing one at the height of their fame in the mid to late 2000s. I remember it just oozed cool and had such a resonant sound, making Luke’s pair of modest Fender Pro Juniors sound so alive and bigger than their small footprint should.

It was one of those moments when, as a guitarist, you’re just as interested in the gear a band is playing as you are the music being played.

Fast forward a decade and here at TNAG we started to represent James Trussart’s work. I remember getting my hands on one of James’s SteelCaster Deluxe models for the first time, and everything I remembered from that first sighting 10 years earlier came flooding back, but this time with the resonance and energy that the guitar exuded sat right in my lap.

So, you may be asking yourself, what is it about these Trussart guitars that is so captivating, and I’m here to tell you exactly that.

To give you the backstory, James Trussart has very much broken the mould in terms of the traditional design and materials used in the making of an electric guitar. While his body shapes are rather familiar, their bodies are rather extraordinary.

The SteelCaster Deluxe has a hollow steel body with an ‘F’ hole, giving it a Thinline Tele look. To help reduce the weight of the steel, the back of the guitar is perforated, while the bolt-on neck is made of Maple, with either an Indian Rosewood or Maple fretboard.

The rest of the guitar serves as a blank canvas, with a choice of pickups ranging from Arcane Inc. single coils and humbuckers to TV Jones Filtertrons, while there’s a choice of a Tele-style three-barrel bridge or Bigsby B5 or B16 tremolos.

It’s in his finishes, where James Trussart’s guitars really show their individuality. Relic’d finishes aplenty, he contrasts bright colours with engraved pickguards. His Rust-o-Matic finishes, the name for which came courtesy of ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons who is a long time Trussart artist, involve leaving the guitar's body out in the elements for a number of weeks until they start to rust before treating the body to stop any further corrosion and finish the guitar in a thin, clear satin coat.

Luke Pritchard and Billy Gibbons aren't the only guitarists to play Trussart guitars. Music icons such as Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bob Dylan, Tom Morello and Eric Clapton have all been seen wielding James's guitars on stage.
