TNAG Nashville: Kim's Picks of The Week

We recently caught up with Kim Sherman, our great friend, and managing partner of TNAG Nashville, to take a look at all the current gorgeous stock in the TNAG Nashville Showroom. Kim chose nine of her favorite guitars for us and gave us her thoughts about each of these.

1944 Martin 000-18 Acoustic Guitar 1944, Mahogany & Adirondack Spruce - $8,000

Not a collectible so much due to all the repairs, but a magical sounding guitar. I love it.

This 1944 Martin 000-18 is an inspiring, players grade instrument with some truly remarkable features and tones available.
There are several repaired top cracks (cleated), and a repair at the endpin. The bridge and bridge plate have been replaced, as have the tuners.
The top is Adirondack, and the bracing is scalloped. When we received the guitar the bridge was cracked, but you can't tell it by the sound (Carl's video was made before Andrew made us a new saddle for the guitar). If anything, the guitar sounds better now, but it sounded great in the video! If you want a great player 000-18 from the 40s, this one is great.
If you have any questions about the condition, please contact us in Nashville for an in-hand description or for more detailed photos.

Bourgeois L-DBO Custom AT 12-Fret Acoustic Guitar, Mahogany & Adirondack Spruce - $6,550.00

Sounds like a much older guitar than it is. I’m impressed.

This blacked-out beauty is an L-DBO Custom AT from Bourgeois Guitars in Lewiston, Maine USA.
Made up out of Mahogany for the back and sides with a Torrefied Adirondack Spruce top, it nails the '30s small body acoustic tonality that became such a staple of the roots and blues movements that followed.
That said, this 12-Fret Custom version has a heightened sense of versatility, with the neck join pushing the bridge and soundhole further into the body and imparting sweetness and depth to the tone of the guitar.
The Madagascar Rosewood topped Mahogany neck is an absolute treat to play and makes for an effortless experience in coaxing out the range of tones on offer from this lively little instrument.
The guitar comes in a Custom Fitted Hardcase.

Has the sound of a much older guitar as well. It's hard to believe this guitar is still here (plus, it's the one on the billboard, lol).

Here is a gorgeous Collings CJ that is comfortable to play with its short scale length, yet suffers no loss of power. Lovely sunburst top over Adirondack, and finished off with a firestripe pickguard. This guitar is pretty much the Collings version of a Gibson J-45.

Collings 00-42 Acoustic Guitar, Adirondack Spruce & Brazilian Rosewood - Pre-Owned - $12,900

This elegant beauty is the first 00-12 fret ever made by Collings, and I have loved it for a long time. It's a delightful instrument.

This 00-42 Brazilian is the very first 00-12 fret guitar Collings ever made. Two good friends of the shop have owned it, and we're thrilled to offer it to you now. The guitar debuted at the Winter NAMM show in 1998. We have a letter from Collings stating that this is the first-ever 00-12 fret built by them. This elegant powerhouse is a shop favorite.

Leo Posch Nick Lucas Model Acoustic Guitar, Highly Figured Maple & Adirondack Spruce - Pre-Owned - $3,500.00

You know me how I love Maple. The Leo has more pearl than I’m used to, but I do love the tone in this guitar.

This guitar is based loosely on the Gibson Nick Lucas model. It features some seriously-figured Maple back and sides, with a 4.25" depth at the neck, ad a 4.625" depth at the end block.
The inlay is an art deco design Leo found and liked better than the original Nick Lucas inlay. The carving on the back of the headstock is of a grayhead coneflower, honoring Leo's original company name, Wildflower Custom Instruments.
This Nick Lucas was purchased new from Cotten Music in 2013.
A sound port has been added in the upper left bout by Custom Fretted Instruments and Repair in Sparta, TN. The inside of the upper bout has been reinforced with Maple around the sound port, so it is well supported. A Zero-Glide has been installed in this guitar, but the original is in the case.
  • Top: Adirondack Spruce
  • Back & Sides: Highly figured Maple
  • Rosette: simple ring rosette
  • Binding: Ivoroid
  • Neck: Maple
  • Fretboard: Ebony with abalone pearl "cloud" inlay
  • Headstock Overlay: Ebony with pearl and abalone clouds in and Leo Posch name in pearl
  • Neck Binding: Ivoroid
  • Tuners: nickel Waverlys with Ivoroid buttons
  • Bridge: Ebony straight bridge
  • Bridge Pins: Ivoroid with abalone pearl
  • Saddle: Bone cut-through

Santa Cruz Custom 000 Acoustic Guitar, Figured Walnut & Sitka Spruce - $8,168

Full and responsive tone. This guitar works great with a light touch or a heavier hand.

We love a great 000-12 fret guitar, and this custom Santa Cruz is no exception. With a beautiful old growth bear-claw Sitka Spruce top and figured Walnut back and sides, this guitar pairs unique aesthetics with a classic pre-war design. It features Adirondack bracing with hot hide glue construction, making it deeply resonant.

When played fingerstyle, this guitar is sweet and responsive, with excellent balance across the strings, and great playability. The 12-fret body offers more volume and projection than its 14-fret counterparts, making it perfect for fingerpicked blues licks, as well as light to medium flatpicking. This is an excellent guitar that pairs what we love about 1930s small-body guitars with the refined craftsmanship of Santa Cruz Guitar Company.

  • Old-Growth Sitka Spruce Top
  • Figured Walnut Back and Sides
  • Mahogany V Neck
  • Scalloped Adirondack Bracing with Hot Hide Glue

Collings OM-1A Acoustic Guitar, Adirondack Spruce & Honduran Mahogany - Pre-Owned - $3,995.00

This guitar looks practically knew for being 12 years old. It's got a warm, balanced, expressive voice.  Love it.

This gorgeous guitar features Adirondack Spruce for the top and a stunning set of Honduran Mahogany for the back and sides. It has a one-piece mahogany neck and a standard and comfortable 25.5" scale length. It comes to us in absolutely excellent condition.
One of the best Collings OM-1As we have heard lately, and this guitar also has some gorgeous Bearclaw markings in the Adirondack Spruce top. We also want to note that the grain in this top is the widest we've ever seen. Amazing guitar with so much power. Super clean for an 11-year-old guitar, too.

Gibson HG-00 1937, Acoustic Guitar, Mahogany & Adirondack Spruce - Pre-Owned - $4,500.00

I can’t believe this guitar is still here. It’s got that old Gibson tone you’re wanting.

This gorgeous HG-00 began its life as a Hawaiian guitar and was later converted to Spanish style with incredible results. With an Adirondack spruce top and mahogany back and sides, this 00 sized guitar has the wonderfully woody tone one would expect from a 1930’s Gibson L-00, with the added tonal properties of a 12 fret design and the heavier bracing found in HG-00s. This difference in bracing causes the guitar to respond more favorably to strumming than typical L-00s from the era.

This vintage flattop works perfectly as a blues box but is equally suited to vocal accompaniment for folk or other roots-inspired styles. Only 625 HG-00 guitars were made by Gibson from 1932 to 1946, making this a rare opportunity to own a special instrument. This guitar has a pretty good-sized neck, but it's got an equally big tone. There is finish checking throughout this guitar alongside various scratches and dings; however, this instrument is crack-free and in excellent condition considering its age.

  • Adirondack Spruce Top
  • Mahogany Back and Sides
  • Mahogany Neck
  • Brazilian Rosewood Fretboard
  • Ivoroid Binding
  • 1-7/8" Nut Width
  • Bone nut
  • Bone Saddle
  • Brazillian Rosewood bridge
  • Replacement Golden Age Tuners
  • Non-original Hardshell Case

Goodall Grand Concert Cutaway, Torrefied Adirondack Spruce & Indian Rosewood - $7,800

My personal favorite is the Goodall CJ Myrtlewood/Port Orford Cedar, but it’s not on the web yet, and running a CLOSE second is this guitar. Plays like butter. Expressive voice!
