TNAG's Visit to Greenfield Guitars (Part 2): Previewing Our G5
Back in October 2016, we took a trip out to California for the Santa Barbara Acoustic Instrument Celebration. This was the first time we had seen Greenfield Guitars' G5 model (or as Michael Greenfield likes to call it, the mini or wee G) and we quickly realised we just HAD to bring one to TNAG!
The G5 soprano guitar is a real masterpiece, just like every Greenfield guitar. This model was designed by Michael specifically for his singer-songwriter and fingerstyle player customers, who spend a lot of their time with a capo around the 5th fret. The tuning is based on standard tuning at the 5th fret A to A and is basically the parallel opposite to a baritone instrument guitar down five frets to B to B.
Due to its small size, the G5 has also been used by many of Michael's clients as the perfect travel guitar as it can easily be carried on as hand luggage.
"It is the perfect recording instrument, as well as for home playing. Great for layering different voices bringing different colours to the pallet you wouldn't find on a regular guitar," says Michael Greenfield.
Having got some time to play the one in Santa Barbara and another model at The Woodnest from my recent visit, this really is a phenomenal model! The tone is beautifully balanced with clean clear trebles that ring out extensively. All I could think whilst playing it was that I wished I had one of these for both stage and studio.
As we have yet to have one of the wonderful instruments into the showroom we have been unable to film and record a demo, but our good friend Mau Lao has produced a wonderful demo of The Reason by Andy McKee on his G5 in Indian Rosewood.
So fast forward back into the Woodnest July 2017 and my self and Michael (still behind that giant oak desk of his) start putting pen to paper and spec the first ever TNAG G5...and here is it:
