Welcome Michihiro Matsuda to TNAG...Tradition, Evolution and Expression!
Tradition, Evolution & Expression...
We are absolutely thrilled to announce that The North American Guitar will now be the exclusive representation for Matsuda Instruments in the U.K & Ireland. We have been huge fans of Michi's work here for many years and to be given the opportunity to represent such an iconic luthier is a true honour.
Michi and I first met a few years back at the Santa Barbara Acoustic Music Celebration in Santa Barbara California where he and I spoke at length about our passion for his instruments, his unique approach to luthiery, his apprenticeship with the master Ervin Somogyi and future projects. A year later we met up again at the Woodstock Invitational Showcase (mostly at breakfast with Jason Kostal) in up state New York, and chatted a little further, but at this stage, I was more of a fan than a potential dealer for Matsuda guitars. However, as they say, wishes can come true!
Fast forward to the this years 'Luthiers Beyond Limits' exhibition at the Winter Namm and Michi and I met to discuss a possible future relationship but more importantly is where I fell in love with his outstanding Model 1 (#112) in Italian spruce top, Moena sides and back, sunburst finish and of course his jaw-dropping Japanese traditional 'Urushi' finish head cover designed by makie artist, Mr Hariya, which we subsequently bought and sold before being able to list on the TNAG site. A few months later and Michi and I put pen to paper and agreed to represent him and his phenomenal instruments.

So for those of you who do not know much about the sensational talent of Michihiro Matsuda let me enlighten you...
Born in Nagoya and raised in Tokyo, Japan, Michi's passion for music and woodworking started at a very young age. After graduating from the Robert Venn School of Lutherie in Phoenix, Arizona, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area for an apprenticeship with master luthier Ervin Somogyi. It was here where Ervin also introduced him to Frank Ford of Gryphon Stringed Instruments where Michi became (and still is) one of the head repair and restoration technicians.
Unlike many luthiers, Michi's start as a full-time professional luthier shot into the mainstream very quickly, with orders for his instruments coming in thick and fast as soon as his apprenticeship with Ervin came to an end.
Pairing traditional woodworking skills with an innovative sense of design and construction, Michi builds around eight to ten guitars each year at his studio in Oakland California. Best known for striving to make instruments that integrate the world's finest materials with innovative shapes, designs and graceful lines. Each guitar is a one-off instrument that incapulates a 3-dimensional work of art with a sonic identity that is only a Matsuda, a truly unique masterpiece in every way to both the collector and player around the world.
"The guitar is the tool of the performer. Good guitars enable anybody to express themselves musically and artistically. But I start to think that guitars are not just the tool to make music, they are more than that. In the process of making the guitar, the wood becomes a musical instrument. I am the person who puts the voice into the guitar, and with my creative visual and sonic design choices, I am expressing myself artistically as well. My custom instruments not only meet the technical needs of the player; they are also personal creative works from my imagination..." Michihiro Matsuda.
