Bill Collings came from a family of engineers, who inspired his meticulous attention to detail and boundless curiosity.

After three decades of building acoustic guitars, Bill Collings and his carefully selected team of builders moved into the electric guitar market in 2006. Known for his exacting standards and tireless devotion to perfecting his models, it wasn't long before Collings' line of electrics grew from just a few - the CL, 290 and I-35 - to their current lineup of eleven distinct hollow, semi-hollow and solid body models. Bill passed away in 2017, but the inspiring team at Collings carry on his legacy, producing some of the most reliable, versatile, and all-around aesthetically hip electric guitars around.

“It's really not the tools. It's the mentality of the people putting it together. In this shop, we have 100 guitar players. That helps.”

Never content to rest on their laurels, Collings has always been about refining, improving, and introducing new models to their lineup. They're as well-loved for the clear, powerful tone and consistency of their guitars as they are for their reliability and commitment to players.

You're working with organic materials. Even the pickups will measure slightly different depending on temperature, or what day, or who wound it, or how tight the cover's soddered on. And the color, the grain orientation, and all of these things - it's almost like you're creating a living machine.

The Guitars

From solid to hollow body constructions, Collings has an electric guitar model for every style and purpose.

Models

290 Series

The Collings 290 is their solid mahogany body electric, named after the scenic highway that runs past the Collings workshop. The base 290 sports one cutaway and two P90 pickups, but players can also choose from the single pickup 290 S, or the double cutaway 290 DC and 290 DC S. Well-loved for their versatile and customizable tone, smooth playability, and eye-catching finish colors, the 290 is a rock workhorse.

Lollar Soapbox and Dogear P90 pickups come standard, but additional pickup options, like Lollar Humbuckers and Goldfoils, ThroBak Humbuckers and P90s, and TV Jones Filter'Tron Humbuckers are also available on custom or special orders, as are a variety of aesthetic options.

Collings' Notes

"The Soapbar P90 has a fat and round bass response with a smoother treble than a traditional P90. This is a hugely versatile pickup with lots of vintage-style warmth."

"The higher wind Dog Ear P90 slightly rounds off high frequency response which adds sweetness and warmth. The low end is fat and rich with strong and clear mids."

360 Series

Collings' 360 Series guitars are defined by an iconic offset design and easy customizability. Originally featuring a carved top, all the 360 guitars now sport a level top and ergonomic shape. A resonant solid body of mahogany (LT), alder or ash (LT M) come with a mahogany or maple neck. The LT M models feature a Mastery Offset bridge and tailpiece. Lollar P90s come standard, but additional pickup options, as well as a variety of other customizable hardware, colors and other features are available.

Collings' Notes

"It should come as no surprise that our longtime partners-in-tone, Lollar Pickups, offers a pickup that perfectly complements the response and range of the 360 LT M. Their custom alnico pole piece soapbar P90s provide the husky tone we had envisioned, but with the perfect amount of punch and clarity to enhance its vast stylistic abilities."

City Limits Series

Collings puts their exacting standards and innovative spin on the Les Paul-inspired City Limits. Premium tonewoods, well-matched pickup options, and customizable finish and hardware options make the City Limits a go-to choice for countless guitarists.

The standard City Limits comes with non-grained ivoroid binding and a cream pickguard, while the Deluxe model features grained ivoroid binding and no pickguard.

Collings' Notes

"With an airy top end and a balanced midrange, Lollar Imperials employ unbalanced coils to create a tight bass response with the full-bodied character and complex overtones of the best original PAF pickups."

I-35 Series

Inspired by vintage 335s, the Collings' double-cutaway, semi-hollow I-35 is at home in a wide variety of genres and settings. It is available in both a laminate construction (LC) and a solid wood construction. The solid wood construction allows for more acoustic resonance and response, but for guitarists who play at higher volumes and with more effects, the focused result of Collings' custom laminates offer some advantages.

The standard I-35 and I-35 LC come with non-grained ivoroid binding and a pickguard, while the Deluxe models feature grained ivoroid binding and no pickguard. Lollar Low Wind Imperial Humbuckers come standard, but Vintage models sport Throbaks. Additional pickup, hardware and finish options, are available on custom orders.

Collings' Notes

"When crafting instruments designed to be used electronically at higher volumes, the resonant qualities of a guitar need a high degree of focus to achieve some of the classic semi-hollow guitar tones. The I-35 LC is the first of a line of laminate instruments designed to respond acoustically in perfect harmony with their electronics."

SoCo Series

The SoCo, named for Austin's South Congress district, is a delightful variation on the semi-hollow design. Sharing a lot of traits with the I-35, the single cutaway construction adds to the overall body, meaning more resonance and bass. It's available in Collings' proprietary maple laminate construction (LC), as well as in a solid maple and mahogany build.

The SoCo LC comes with non-grained ivoroid binding and a pickguard, while the Deluxe models feature grained ivoroid binding and no pickguard. Lollar Low Wind Imperial Humbuckers come standard. Additional pickup, hardware and finish options, are available on custom orders.

The standard SoCos measure 15" at the lower bout, but for folks wanting a bigger, fuller sound, Collings also makes the SoCo 16 LC.

Collings' Notes

"A 15" lower bout gives this SoCo a comfortable, well-balanced feel and exceptional note articulation. The single-cutaway body design makes for greater mass and contact with the neck joint, providing solid low-end reponse and a resonance you can feel right through the instrument."

I-30 Series

Collings' I-30 is as much vintage-inspired as it is Collings-inspired. The result of extensive R&D, the fully hollow, trestle-braced, maple laminate construction has the acoustic resonance and response you might expect from a lightly built hollow body electric. But thanks to their proprietary laminates, it's "focused and feedback resistant enough to be utilized in jazz, blues, rock and roll, and many other styles." Dog Ear P90 pickups further bring out the full-range of tone, from classic jazz to British Invasion rock.

Currently only available in a standard LC variation. Different finishes and trim options are available on custom orders.

Collings' Notes

"Our goal for the I-30 LC was to take the concept of a double cutaway, fully-hollow, P90 equipped guitar and refine it to the extent that it offers something truly new for today's players. The result is one of the most acoustically responsive and versatile electric guitars we have ever offered."
