Bill Bonanzinga doesn't seem to be one for the self-promotion, given the New York based luthier doesn't currently maintain a website. But from the years of forum postings, Reverb listings, and his association with folks like Uncle Tupelo and the Jayhawks, he's clearly been building guitars for some time, and to plenty of acclaim. This striking Holly Springs dreadnought, with a deep sunburst and Tree of Life inlay, has another stand-out feature: wenge back and sides. Though the African tonewood is growing in popularity, we still don't see it on a ton of guitars, and probably even less often on Golden Era-inspired classics like this one. It's often known for having a zingy attack and glassy sustain. Bill proves those traits can be harnessed well on a flatpicking workhorse, delivering up a huge-sounding dreadnought that has the high end clarity to cut through a mix without sounding brash.

This pre-owned 2004 model bears the signs of a life well-played, with superficial pick scratches on and around the pickguard and the upper bout, strap rash on the bass side around the waist, button scuffs on the back, and a little scuffing on the treble side rim. (A visit to the buffing machine may be in order, pending seller approval.) Fretwear is negligible.
