"An homage to 1937 design" and "the ultimate bluegrass guitar" was how Dana Bourgeois described this deluxe D-28 when he debuted it as his second Luthier's Choice guitar at the 2012 Winter NAMM. And that's exactly what it is. A very thin varnish finish allows the premium sets of Adirondack spruce and Brazilian rosewood--which Dana had long been saving for just the right guitar--to sound their absolute best. The fat, rumbling bass is perfectly well-balanced by the crisp, clear trebles, and there's a pleasant zing to the sustain. And of course, we've got the killer vintage vibes that Bourgeois is so good at recreating, from the traditional 28-style herringbone purfling and zipper backstrip, to the ivoroid binding and slight amber coloring. In short, it's everything you could want from a vintage D-28, but in a modern package.
Despite its nine years, this Winter NAMM '12 Dreadnought Custom remains in excellent condition. The only marks to note are on the pickguard, showing us that the prior owner was a diligent but careful player.
