Details

Nearly 100 years after the dreadnought was first conceived as an oversized iteration of the classic Hawaiian guitar, Collings has introduced the DS1; a guitar that holds true to its bygone predecessors, while pushing ahead into the world of modern guitar innovation.  This model pays homage to the original 12-fret dreadnought by retaining its distinct body shape, wide neck, and slotted headstock. Its longer body and 12-fret construction allow for the bridge to be positioned in the center of the lower bout, consequently creating an open, airy tone with smoothness and warmth that would be difficult to evoke from a modern 14-fret dreadnought.

Collings pushes this versatile large-bodied powerhouse into the future with their compound 14”-26” fretboard radius, meticulously thin nitrocellulose lacquer finish (between .005”-.007”), and proprietary hand voicing of each guitar’s top.  This custom model features a 1 3/4” nut width, as well as a comfortable 2 3/16” spacing at the saddle, ornate rope purfling, and Adirondack top braces. The melding of Collings’ modern appointments with the design and inspiration of the 12-fret dread’s roots has left us with a guitar that spans the gamut from lush accompaniment to soaring leads. The Collings DS1 is a modern guitar, with a tone that is totally unique, and a design that hearkens back to the origins of the 12-fret dreadnought.
