Details
Designed by the legendary Lloyd Loar, Gibson first launched the L-5 in 1922. The luthier is also known for his pioneering work in mandolins and electric guitars, but the L-5 archtop might be his most beloved and influential contribution of all.
This model was built in 1928, a highly sought after year for the light D profile of the neck and classic dot fingerboard. The tonewoods show through the Cremona sunburst beautifully. The figured maple back and sides and quartersawn spruce produce the bright, punchy and woody tone that set the standard for jazz acoustic archtops. As our repair tech Bill said, "Once I have a spare twenty-something grand laying around, this is the first thing I'm buying!"
As far as we know, the hardware is original, and the overall condition is very good, with one notable but small grainline crack near the upper bout F-hole that appears stable. Ships out in a custom fit Calton flight case. Reach out to Kim for a further in-hand description!
