Details
"The wizardry of 'Nick Lucas' and his guitar is known to all music lovers. Combining his ideas and knowledge with the skill of Gibson Artist-Craftsmen has given birth to a truly magnificent guitar."
Gibson's Nick Lucas Special guitars were produced from 1926 to 1941, and the ad copy at the time certainly wasn't going for restrained understatement! Gibson approached the radio star in the early 1920s about building him an instrument, and he agreed if it met his requests for a wider neck and deeper and wider body. The model evolved over the years, but by the time this one was made in 1932, it had settled into a 13-fret short-scale design, with a deep 4-5/8" body. Later models had maple or mahogany back and sides, but this one has Brazilian rosewood and an Adirondack spruce top.
This guitar is no closet queen, sporting many signs of playwear and evidence of much work done in the past. The frets show some wear, and the fingerboard has notable grooves from fretting. At one point, the back was removed for a partial rebrace. There's a repaired chip on the heel cap, overspray on the waist (bass side), and signs of touch-up all over. The bridge was replaced and converted, and the tuners are non-original. Reach out for a more detailed in-hand description.
