“I like a good, full bass and crystal-clear highs—like a grand piano,” he says. “When you hit some notes, like up on the 12th fret on the high strings, they just keep on ringing: you hear the guitar ring like a brass bell. I work for that.”

Del Langejans built guitars for several decades out of his workshop near Lake Michigan before retiring in 2013. For much of that time, he also ran a guitar store, dealing major brands like Gibson and Martin, as well as selling his own instruments (of which he made a staggering 50 a year!). While the bulk of his guitars were classic and reliable dreadnoughts, Grand Concerts, and nylon-string classicals, he also built some special instruments for folks like Muriel Anderson, Thom Bresh, and Earl Klugh.

This 1999 Brazilian rosewood and cedar Grand Concert features two of Del's signature features. The neck is strong, solid Indian rosewood, with a double-acting truss rod. Del said he never had one break or need a reset. It also features thicker sides than most guitars have, making it rigid while allowing the tops and backs to be thinner and more responsive. He achieved his goals with this guitar, in spades. It has the deep, fat and enveloping bass of a deeper bodied guitar, but with the focus and balance of an OM. The mids are warm and fill out the spectrum, while clear highs leap out over top. It has its fair share of minor finish dings and scratches, putting it into the "player grade" category, but structurally is sound and plays beautifully. Plus it comes with an L.R. Baggs iMix pickup system.
