Details
While the sweeter sounding dreadnoughts of the 1930s may have been the start of Martin’s golden age, it is the 1940s that are responsible for their instruments of pure power. Earlier in the decade, they had made the switch from forward to rear-shifted bracing, and stopped scalloping the braces so that the tops would stand up better to the medium gauge strings players were using. The result is a dynamic beast of a guitar that is likely the origin of the term "Banjo Killer".
This oversprayed and well-played 1947 model may not be a closet queen, but it has a powerful, direct voice and represents its class well (as Carl proves in the video demo below). The neck has been reset recently, and it has a new bridge. We suspect it was at some point refretted, as currently the frets are in great condition.
