Details

Johnny Cash is one of Country Music’s most legendary figures. His deep baritone voice and evocative lyrics made him the voice of the everyman. From his infamous concert at Folsom Prison in 1968 to his final acoustic gigs in the 90s and early 2000s, Cash could be seen playing Martin Guitars. In 1989, Cash ordered a custom Martin D-35. Fittingly, he wanted it in a custom all-black finish. The company’s then-president C.F. Martin III believed an all-black guitar to be too radical and nixed the idea. However, the guitar was built secretly, and Martin III had no idea the guitar had been made until he saw Cash playing it on Television.

The guitar is based on the classic D-35 which was introduced in 1965. Essentially an upgraded D-28, the D-35 sports a three-piece back, and fretboard binding alongside the typical ivoroid-bound body. As one would expect with a D-35, this guitar is loud, rich, and powerful. It’s great for vocal accompaniment and is equally adept at classic bluegrass flatpicking. The back and sides offer the tonal complexity Rosewood is famous for, and the Englemann Spruce top is bright and responsive. This is a unique opportunity to own a very special Martin Guitar and is no doubt worthy of the man it commemorates. This guitar is in excellent pre-owned condition and comes with its OHSC.
