One look at a McIlroy guitar, and it'll come as no surprise that Dermot McIlroy spent 10 years at Lowden Guitars before striking out on his own in 1990s. His A model guitars are mid-sized jumbos, a versatile design that combines a larger 15-3/4" lower bout with a tight waist (and here with a cutaway for even more possibilities). While this may be what he calls a Standard Range model, this guitar sports plenty of premium features. Solid walnut is beautifully balanced by cedar, a tone that combines the brightness of the former with the warmth of the latter, for a focused, balance voice. In keeping with the Celtic aesthetic, matching wood bindings and a rosewood bridge create cohesion, while the satin finish is the perfect enhancement to the wood textures. This pre-owned model was built in 2003, and remains in excellent overall condition, save for some minor pick marks around the strings and shallow nicks in the satin finish.
