Spending my days at The North American Guitar is a treat in so many ways. Still, one of the best things about being here is that I am introduced regularly to luthiers who take time-tested designs and push the boundaries to offer a fresh perspective on guitars I already know and love. As a fan of traditional 14-fret 00s (specifically the Gibson L-00 and its modern, yet traditional-based offspring), young German luthier Max Spohn's 00 was, for me, a lovely surprise.
Maybe it's the light weight, its Kandinsky-inspired geometric rosette and trim, its gorgeous Fiddleback Mahogany and Moon Spruce tonewoods, or perhaps it's just that I like the way it feels and sounds that makes this guitar work for me. This 00 is our first guitar from Max, and I can say without hesitation, I hope it's not our last. It’s quite responsive to a light touch but does not shy away from a firmer hand. The 00 is expressive and lively, yet still composed. The volume is there, and the feel is there. All in all, just what I like in a 00. -k
