Details

Ben Wilborn's approach to guitar building is both straightforward and clever. Minimally appointed, lightly built and tone-focused, his designs split off into two camps: the Comma Series, which feature his imaginative, offset soundhole designs, and the Period Series, which tip the hat to traditional builds. The Lion is a member of that latter group, and this "Lioness" is a variation on Ben's standard 14-fret 00 design. The lower bout may be a bit shy of the standard, but the 13-fret neck join ensures this small-bodied guitar still has plenty of dynamic range and presence.

The top is Tunnel 14 redwood, reclaimed from the beams used to support the tunnels of the Southern Pacific Railroad in Oregon built back in the 1880s. A fascinating enough story on its own, but all that time spent opening up and drying out means this relatively young guitar, built in 2019, has that sought after played-in tone. Paired with mahogany, it's got warmth and midrange focus, and thanks to the soundport on the side, that sound envelopes the player much as the audience. Condition is excellent, and it comes with its original lightweight Visesnut hard case.

"A great choice for lead players, the smaller body size contributes to a very even and articulate sound all the way up the neck, with great note separation and attack, and an incredibly sweet and powerful midrange."
