Details

The "genesis of the Comma Series design", the Wilborn Nautilus may have the dimensions of a mid-sized OM or Concert, but it definitively has a voice and look all its own. The full suite of features Ben uses on his Comma Series guitars can be found here. The modest multiscale design maximizes the tonal response on both ends of the spectrum while presenting no challenge to the player, and an elevated fingerboard helps to create more overtones. The 3D offset soundhole points sound upward to the player, while a dramatic cutaway and an arm bevel add comfort and access. An additional feature not seen on all his other guitars is a back bevel, giving this guitar a slimmer, more comfortable feel against the body.

Best of all are the unusual and gorgeous tonewoods Ben has used on this versatile shape. Gorgeously figured North American myrtle is denser than maple but lighter than rosewood, providing a woody and warm sound. Ben describes it as creamy and full, with a less pronounced high end, so notes stay rich and resonant when soloing up the neck. He accented this cello-like richness with an autumnal cello burst, with uncommon finishing touches of ziricote on the binding, fingerboard, and bridge.
